Why Afflictedyard Exists

Afflictedyard is a small independent publication about Jamaican visual and musical culture, written for readers who want to look closely and listen carefully. It is made for people who collect photo books, follow sound system history, wander cities looking at walls, or simply want to understand what they are seeing and hearing.

Three subjects that keep meeting

The site is organised around Jamaican photography, reggae and dancehall, and street art. They belong together. A portrait of a dance can explain a fashion trend, a record sleeve can show how a neighbourhood saw itself, and a mural can carry a lyric far beyond the speaker that first played it.

  • Jamaican Photography looks at documentary work, portraiture, archives and the way images of the island are made, shared and remembered.
  • Reggae & Dancehall follows artists, eras, rhythms, sound system practice and the language and style that grew around the music.
  • Street Art covers murals, hand-painted signs and wall culture, including the stories and the neighbourhoods behind them.

How pieces are put together

The aim is writing that is clear, specific and useful, whether you are new to a subject or already know it well. Facts such as dates, release details and attributions are checked against books, museum and archive notes, interviews and the creators’ own statements where they exist. When sources disagree or memory is the only record, the article says so.

Culture is not static and neither are the articles. Pages are revisited and revised when new information appears or when something turns out to be wrong.

Who reads it

Readers include longtime fans, students, photographers, painters, travellers and people curious about the island from far away. Nothing here assumes specialist knowledge or a big budget.
